Reinhard Schulte-Braucks
Head of Automotive Industry Unit, Directorate General for Enterprise, European Commission
Dr. Reinhard SCHULTE-BRAUCKS joined the European Commission in 1981. He worked in a number of areas such as anti-trust, completion of the internal market, and enterprise policy. He was involved i.a. in abolishing the steel quota system, in deregulating the telecommunications industry and in formulating the Commission's proposals for a new system of control of chemicals (REACH).
In April 2004 he took up his present position as head of the Automotive Industry Unit of the Commission's Enterprise Directorate-General. He looks after the industry's competitiveness and is responsible for regulations relating to the type approval of motor vehicles and tractors. His particular interest lies in ensuring that the automotive industry enjoys a regulatory framework that is conducive to both growth and sustainable development.
He graduated in law after studies at the Universities of Freiburg i. Br. and Lausanne. He also earned a Master of Laws degree from the University of California, Berkeley and a Doctor in Law degree from the University of Göttingen.
Before joining the Commission, he worked as a member of the law department of Munich Reinsurance Company.
