Report n°1: The new constraints of urban development
Drinking water supply
Urban sprawl raises the problem of the infrastructure costs necessary to develop a new urbanised zone, particularly in the case of low-density zones. In the case of drinking water supply, the pipes need to be built outwards from treatment centres. It is also generally considered that for the same quantity of treated water, several small, localised concerns cost more than a single large one. With the aim of adapting to new forms of housing, it may be possible in certain countries, according to the situation, to supply only one flow of water from the treatment plants, of a medium quality that is acceptable for various domestic uses, and then provide an improved individual purification service depending on the final quality desired.
This would also match the current rise in demand for safety that can be seen at all levels. Water purification at the home would safeguard it against all external pollution, and would be an additional sales point for all types of accommodation equipped with such a system.
