The United Nations General Assembly took a decisive step in 2023 with the formal recognition of the One Health concept. Acknowledging the advances and limits of scientific understanding of ecosystems, UN bodies called for the concept to be translated into concrete policy actions, stating that “the health of humans, domestic and wild animals, plants, and the wider environment (including ecosystems) are closely linked and interdependent.” Mindful of the growing focus on this conceptual framework and the increasing number of overly simplistic interpretations, the Tara Ocean Foundation, with its track record of scientific expeditions stretching back more than 20 years, seeks to explore the reality of the approach through the prism of ocean sciences and reveal its full depth and complexity.
