De 2007 à 2015, le journal S.A.P.I.EN.S a proposé une approche globale et intégrée des connaissances scientifiques dans le domaine du développement durable, à l'interface entre société et environnement. Avec 2,5 millions d’articles scientifiques publiés chaque année, ni l’information en soi, ni son accessibilité n’est réellement un facteur limitant dans la compréhension scientifique. Au contraire, la difficulté vient du cloisonnement des connaissances : les frontières entre les différentes disciplines académiques constituent un obstacle à la compréhension. S.A.P.I.EN.S publie des articles d’analyse critique ou de perspectives qui doivent répondre au critère de ne pas utiliser de terminologies spécifiques pour que le contenu soit accessible aux lecteurs de toutes les disciplines. These are flexibility in application, provision of information, the creation of dynamic standards, the enabling of adaptive management, and the harmonisation of policy instruments.
